App attach for Azure Virtual Desktop now generally available

App attach for Azure Virtual Desktop allows IT admins to dynamically attach applications from an application package to a user session in Azure Virtual Desktop.
In December 2023, we announced a public preview for some exciting new app attach features. App attach is now generally available and here is a summary of the new capabilities:

Applications can now be assigned to any host pool or session host. You can assign application packages to multiple host pools in your environment.
Applications can now be assigned per user, both within a desktop session and remote app sessions. This means that in any host pool in any session, users can be assigned different application combinations. This should reduce the number of host pools and images you require.
Application groups are no longer required to assign users to app attach apps, significantly simplifying assignment and reducing the number of application groups needed.
Application assignment, removal, and upgrades can be performed without needing a maintenance window and without interrupting a user’s workflow.
Microsoft Entra ID support for app attach has been introduced. Microsoft Entra hybrid join will work as it did before.
Dependency support has improved, including modification packages for remote apps.
A migration script is available to move existing MSIX app attach application packages to the new architecture.

We’re excited about these new features and recommend that any new app attach object be created using the new flow.
Now let’s look at these new capabilities:

Hibernation support now available for Azure Virtual Desktop

Today we are happy to announce the general availability of hibernation support in Azure Virtual Desktop. Explore additional capabilities that make it easier to save compute costs for your idle resources.
Hibernation support in Azure Virtual Desktop
In November 2023, we announced the public preview of hibernation support in Azure Virtual Desktop. Hibernating a session host virtual machine (VM) deallocates the machine while persisting the VM's in-memory state. When a VM hibernates, you don't pay for the compute cost associated with the VM. Instead you pay only for the storage and networking costs associated with the VM. When the session host virtual machine starts, the user will be able to quickly resume from where they left off.
The following capabilities are now generally available in Azure Virtual Desktop:

Hibernation can be enabled for session host VMs deployed to personal host pools.
Hibernation can be chosen as the scaling action for disconnect or logoff for personal host pools. For more details about configuring personal scaling plan, see Create a scaling plan.

These capabilities are available in addition to those released during the public preview, which included the following:

Hibernation can be enabled on existing session host VMs.
Resize is supported for session host VMs with hibernation enabled.
Hibernation support extended to more VM sizes and series.

Getting started
You can enable hibernation when deploying session host VMs for your personal host pools using Azure Portal, PowerShell, CLI, ARM, SDKs, and APIs. You can enable hibernation for existing VMs using PowerShell, CLI, ARM, SDKs, and APIs.
A screenshot of personal host pool Virtual Machines configuration in Azure Virtual Desktop with vTPM and Integrity monitoring, Virtual machine size is set to ’Standard D2as v5’, hibernate is enabled.
To enable hibernation in your scaling plan, you will need to:

Create a personal scaling plan.
Define whether to enable or disable Start VM on Connect.

Introducing Azure Virtual Desktop workload in Azure Stack HCI Sizer!

Earlier in February 2024, we announced the general availability of Azure Virtual Desktop for Azure Stack HCI which extends the capabilities of the Microsoft Cloud to your datacenters and edge locations . Today, we are happy to announce that ‘Azure Virtual Desktop’ is now available as a new workload category in Azure Stack HCI sizer! It enables customers to efficiently plan and size Azure Virtual Desktop deployments on Azure Stack HCI by calculating no. of VM required, suggest per VM configuration and what hardware to purchase.
Azure Stack HCI Sizer
Azure Stack HCI Sizer is a web-based comprehensive tool to assist organizations in accurately estimating hardware requirements for their Azure Stack HCI deployments.
Azure Virtual Desktop for Azure Stack HCI
Bringing the benefits of Azure Virtual Desktop and Azure Stack HCI together, Azure Virtual Desktop for Azure Stack HCI lets organizations securely run virtualized desktops and apps on-premises at the edge or in their datacenter. For organizations with data residency requirements, latency-sensitive workloads, or those with data proximity requirements.
Getting Started
The sizer allows you to create multiple projects, thus reflecting your various business needs. To plan your Azure Virtual Desktop workload on Azure Stack HCI, first go to the sizer tool and create a new project.
Step 1 of the sizer asks you for Environmental preferences that will stay consistent across your projects, for example, Preferred system type, CPU family etc.
Step 1: Set Environmental Preferences

Step 2 of the sizer asks for your workloads. You can now select ‘Azure Virtual Desktop’ as a Workload category when you click on ‘Add workload’. As soon as you select workload category as ‘Azure Virtual Desktop’, you can now provide information about your environment like:

Max. concurrency percentage i.e., maximum no. of users who will login concurrently
Session type i.e. Multi-session or Single session
Workload type i.e. Light, Medium, Heav<br />Update Type: Announcement, Services: Virtual Machines, Virtual Desktop, Categories:

Announcing Public Preview of Confidential VMs with Intel TDX in Azure Virtual Desktop

We are excited to announce that Azure Virtual Desktop now supports the public preview of DCesv5 and ECesv5-series confidential VMs. These confidential VMs are powered by 4th Gen Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors with Intel® Trust Domain Extensions (Intel® TDX) and enable organizations to bring confidential workloads to the cloud without code changes to applications. Through the gated preview, we continued to enhance performance with our Intel partnership. These new virtual machines are up to 20% faster than 3rd Gen Intel Xeon virtual machines, and we expect performance for I/O intensive workloads to continue to improve as the technology matures.
Azure confidential VMs (CVMs) offer VM memory encryption with integrity protection, which strengthens guest protections to deny the hypervisor and other host management components code access to the VM memory and state. For additional CVM security benefits, please see the CVM documentation for more information.
For more information on AVD’s support for confidential VMs, please see this blog.
For more information about Intel TDX confidential VMs, please see this blog for more information.

Note: Intel TDX is offered in Europe West, Central US, and East US 2 regions. Europe North will be available in January 2024.

How to deploy Intel TDX Confidential VMs in AVD Host Pool Provisioning

On the Virtual machine location, select “Europe West”, “Central US”, or “East US 2”.

Select Confidential Virtual Machines from the Security Type dropdown in the AVD Host Pool Virtual Machine blade.

From there, go down to Virtual machine size, and click on “Change size” link.

You will then get directed towards a table that gives you all SKUs available, make sure on the top, that the “Type” is “Confidential Compute”.

New app attach features for Azure Virtual Desktop in public preview

New app attach functionality for Azure Virtual Desktop is now available in public preview and should roll out over the next few days. App attach has had a major re-work with new and exciting features. Here's a summary of the new capabilities in public preview:

Applications can now be assigned to any host pool or session host. You can assign application packages to multiple host pools in your environment.
Applications can now be assigned per user, both within a desktop session and remote app sessions. This means that in any host pool in any session, users can be assigned different application combinations. This should reduce the number of host pools and images you require.
Applications are now assigned using the application itself. Application groups are no longer required to assign users to app attach apps, significantly simplifying assignment and reducing the number of application groups needed.
Application assignment, removal, and upgrades can be performed without needing a maintenance window and without interrupting a user's workflow.
Microsoft Entra ID support for app attach has been introduced, removing the pre-requisite for line of sight to a domain controller. Microsoft Entra Hybrid Join will still work as it did before.
Dependency support has improved, including modification packages for remote apps.
A migration script is available to move existing MSIX app attach application packages to the new architecture.

You can learn more about the new version of app attach for Azure Virtual Desktop in our documentation. To dive deeper into the latest enhancements to MSIX and app attach overall, watch MSIX and app attach made easy from the recent Microsoft Technical Takeoff.

Personal Desktop Autoscale on Azure Virtual Desktop generally available

We are excited to announce that Personal Desktop Autoscale on Azure Virtual Desktop is generally available as of November 15, 2023! With this feature, organizations with personal host pools can optimize costs by shutting down or hibernating idle session hosts, while ensuring that session hosts can be started when needed.
Personal Desktop Autoscale
Personal Desktop Autoscale is Azure Virtual Desktop’s native scaling solution that automatically starts session host virtual machines according to schedule or using Start VM on Connect and then deallocates or hibernates (in preview) session host virtual machines based on the user session state (log off/disconnect).
The following capabilities are now generally available with Personal Desktop Autoscale:

Scaling plan configuration data can be stored in all regions where Azure Virtual Desktop host pool objects are, including Australia East, Canada Central, Canada East, Central US, East US, East US 2, Japan East, North Central US, North Europe, South Central US, UK South, UK West, West Central US, West Europe, West US, West US 2, and West US 3. It needs to be stored in the same region as the host pool objects it will be assigned to, however, we support deploying session host virtual machines in all Azure regions.
You can use the Azure portal, REST API, PowerShell to enable and manage Personal Desktop Autoscale.

The following capabilities are new in public preview with Personal Desktop Autoscale:

Hibernation is available as a scaling action. With the Hibernate-Resume feature in public preview, you will have a better experience as session state persists when the virtual machine hibernates. As a result, when the session host virtual machine starts, the user will be able to quickly resume where they left off. More details of the Hibernate-Resume feature can be found here.

Getting started
To enable Personal Desktop Autoscale, you need to:

Create a personal scaling plan.
Define whether to enable or disable Start VM on Connect.

OneDrive support for Azure Virtual Desktop RemoteApps in public preview

OneDrive is a robust but simple-to-use cloud storage platform for small businesses, enterprises, and everything in between. Unlike other cloud storage providers, most of the advanced enterprise-focused features in OneDrive are available for every subscription type, enabling organizations to use OneDrive in whatever way benefits them the most.

Previously, OneDrive could only be used on Azure Virtual Desktop with non-persistent desktops and was not supported on RemoteApps.
With this new support, you can now use Microsoft OneDrive alongside a RemoteApp in Azure Virtual Desktop, allowing users to access and synchronize their files while using a RemoteApp. When a user connects to a RemoteApp, OneDrive can automatically launch as a companion to the RemoteApp. The new support has the same features and usability as the OneDrive on your personal device.

Here you can see Feedback Hub opened as a RemoteApp and OneDrive is synced and ready for the same session:

The OneDrive support for Azure Virtual Desktop RemoteApps is currently only available with Windows 11.

Announcing general availability of Azure Virtual Desktop Custom Image Templates

We are excited to announce that Azure Virtual Desktop Custom image templates is now general available in Azure Public Cloud and entering public preview in Azure Government Cloud and China.

Custom image templates allow admins to build a custom “golden image” using the Azure Virtual Desktop management user interface. Leverage a variety of built-in customizations or add your own customization scripts to install applications or configurations.

Below is an example that showcases a selection of customizations that admins can choose from. These customizations cover common configurations used in golden images. Admins won't need to write their own scripts. They can also select install language packs, FSLogix agents or Teams as well as configure popular features like time zone redirection, screen capture protection or RDP Shortpath.

This feature is a wrapper for the Azure Image Builder (AIB) service. Once you have completed creating the template, Azure Virtual Desktop passes it to the AIB service. AIB will then distribute the resulting image to either a managed image or to the Azure Compute Gallery which supports capabilities such as automated versioning and image replication across any Azure region.

Once this golden image has been created, you can then create a host pool from this image. You can also use any existing tooling to use this image and update your existing session hosts within a host pool.

Getting Started Get started with the Custom image template documentation here. As this feature uses Azure Image Builder behind the scenes it is recommended that you familiarize yourself with this capability.

Announcing General Availability of Confidential VMs in Azure Virtual Desktop

Today we are announcing the General Availability of several confidential VM and Trusted Launch security features via AVD Host Pool Provisioning.

What are Confidential VMs?

The AMD Azure EPYC SEV-SNP DCasV5 and ECasv5-series confidential VM series provides a hardware-based Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) with attestation capability by leveraging AMD SEV-SNP security features. Azure confidential VMs (CVMs) offer VM memory encryption with integrity protection, which strengthens guest protections to deny the hypervisor and other host management components code access to the VM memory and state. For additional CVM security benefits, please see the CVM documentation for more information.
With this general availability, Windows 11 22H1 is now also supported in CVMs, adding to the list of already supported versions of 22H2 and other future versions of Windows 11. In addition, confidential OS Disk Encryption is available for confidential VMs, and Integrity monitoring is available during AVD Host Pool provisioning for both confidential VMs and Trusted Launch VMs.
Confidential disk encryption is an additional layer of encryption that binds the disk encryption keys to the VM’s TPM and makes the disk content accessible only to the VM. For more information about disk encryption, please visit FAQ - Azure Disk Encryption for Windows VMs - Azure Virtual Machines | Microsoft Learn.
Integrity monitoring allows cryptographic attestation and verification of VM boot integrity. It includes monitoring alerts for the VM booting because attestation failed with the defined baseline. For more information about integrity monitoring, please visit the Microsoft Defender for Cloud Integration section of Trusted Launch for Azure VMs documentation.

What is Trusted Launch?
Trusted Launch (TL) protects against advanced and persistent attack techniques.
Announcing the public preview of Azure Virtual Desktop Custom Image Templates

Today I am pleased to announce the public preview of a new feature in Azure Virtual Desktop called Custom image templates.

Custom image templates allows admins to build a custom “golden image” with the added capability to include Azure Virtual Desktop built-in customizations as well as your own customization scripts to install other applications or set of configurations.
This feature is a wrapper for the Azure Image Builder (AIB) service. It takes the elements that you want to include in your build, and ships it to the AIB service which builds the image including any additional customizations you have either selected from the AVD built in customizations or those of your own. AIB will then distribute the resulting image to either a managed image or to the Azure Compute Gallery which supports capabilities such as automated versioning and image replication across any Azure region.

We have created a number of "built-in" customizations that you can easily select to include into your image. These cover typical installations and configurations used in golden images for which you would need to write your own PowerShell scripts to configure if using other tooling to create images. This saves you time as we have automated these installations and configurations for you. These cover but are not limited to:

Installing Language packs
Installing FSLogix
Installing Teams and configuring optimizations
Installing and configuring multimedia redirection
Configuring Screen capture protection
Configuring session timeouts
Configuring RDP Shortpath
Installing any outstanding Windows updates.

This list will grow as we add additional items.

Once this golden image has been created you can then create a host pool from this image.
You can also use any existing tooling to use this image and update your existing session hosts within a host pool.

As this feature uses Azure Image Builder behind the scenes it is recommended that you familiarize yourself with this cap<br />Update Type: Preview, Services: Virtual Desktop, Categories: Services
