We are excited to announce customer managed Planned Failover for Azure Storage is now available in public preview. Over the past few years Azure Storage has offered customer managed (unplanned) failover as a disaster recovery solution for geo-redundant storage accounts. This has enabled our users to meet their business requirements for disaster recovery testing and compliance. Planned failover now provides the same benefits while introducing additional benefits to our storage users. Planned Failover provides the ability to swap your geo primary and secondary regions while the storage service endpoints are still healthy. As a result, a user can now failover their storage account while keeping geo-redundancy and with no data loss or additional cost. Users will no longer need to reconfigure geo-redundant storage (GRS) after their planned failover operation which will save them both time and cost. Once the planned failover operation is completed all new writes will be made to your original secondary region, which will now be your primary region. After the planned failover is complete, the original primary region becomes the new secondary and the original secondary region becomes the new primary. There are multiple scenarios where Planned Failover can be utilized including: Planned disaster recovery testing drills to validate business continuity and disaster recovery. Recovering from a partial outage that occurs in the primary region where storage is not impacted. For example, if your storage service endpoints are healthy in both regions, but another Microsoft or 3rd party service is facing an outage in the primary region you can failover your storage services. In this scenario, once you failover the storage account and all other services your workloads can continue to work. Soft delete protects your Azure file shares from accidental deletion. The following feature was already made available for SMB File share. Today, we are announcing the general availability of soft delete for NFS Azure file shares. The functionality will remain the same. Soft delete is like a recycle bin for your file shares. When a NFS file share is deleted, it transitions to a soft deleted state in the form of a soft deleted snapshot. You get to configure how long the soft deleted data is recoverable before it is permanently erased as part of the retention policy, by default its set to 7 days. Today, soft deleted NFS shares are not being counted towards the Storage account limit. We are providing a 30-day window (grace period) to update or change your automation scripts to account for soft deleted capacity when soft delete is enabled for NFS shares. By Sept 1st, 2024, we will roll out the change to start counting soft deleted capacity towards the account limit. What will change from September 1st 2024? soft deleted capacity will start counting towards storage account limits, this means the number of file shares that you can create on given storage account will be guarded by storage account limits when soft delete is enabled. Refer here for more information on supported capacity limits. Soft-deleted shares will be listed under deleted shares in the file share blade. To mount them or view their contents, you must undelete them. Upon undelete, the share will be recovered to its previous state, including all metadata as well as snapshots (Previous Versions). Azure Storage has started to enable TLS 1.3 support on public HTTPS endpoints across its platform globally to align with security best practices. Azure Storage currently supports TLS 1.0, 1.1 (scheduled for deprecation by November 2024), and TLS 1.2 on public HTTPS endpoints. This blog provides additional guidance on how to prepare for upcoming support for TLS 1.3 for Azure Storage. TLS 1.3 introduces substantial enhancements compared to its predecessors. TLS 1.3 improvements focus on both performance and security, featuring faster handshakes and a streamlined set of more secure cipher suites, namely TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 and TLS_AES_128_GCM_SHA256. Notably, TLS 1.3 prioritizes Perfect Forward Secrecy (PFS) by eliminating key exchange algorithms that don't support it. Clients that utilize the latest available TLS version will automatically pick TLS 1.3 when it is available. If you need more time to upgrade to TLS 1.3, you can choose to continue to use TLS 1.2 by controlling the TLS negotiations through client configuration (see recommendations section below). Azure storage will continue to support TLS 1.2 in addition to TLS 1.3. We have outlined below some of the known issues with TLS 1.3 enablement, potential impact and mitigation. Known Issues, impact and mitigation Certain Java clients can experience high latencies, timeouts, and connections that hang for extended periods due to a bug in the Java Http stack.
