Routing options for VMs from Private Subnets

Virtual Machines deployed in Azure used to have Default Outbound Internet Access. Until today, this allows virtual machines to connect to resources on the internet (including public endpoints of Azure PaaS services) even if the Cloud administrators have not configured any outbound connectivity method for their virtual machines explicitly. Implicitly, Azure's network stack performed source network address translation (SNAT) with a public IP address that was provided by the platform.

As part of their commitment to increase security on customer workloads, Microsoft will deprecate Default Outbound Internet Access on 30 September 2025 (see the official announcement here). As of this day, customers will need to configure an outbound connectivity method explicitly if their virtual machine requires internet connectivity. Customers will have the following options:

Attach a dedicated Public IP Address to a virtual machine.
Deploy a NAT gateway and attach it to the VNet subnet the VM is connected to.
Deploy a Load Balancer and configure Load Balancer Outbound Rules for virtual machines.
Deploy a Network Virtual Appliance (NVA) to perform SNAT, such as Azure Firewall, and route internet-bound traffic to the NVA before egressing to the internet.

Today, customers can start preparing their workloads for the updated platform behavior. By setting property defaultOutboundAccess to false during subnet creation, VMs deployed to this subnet will not benefit from the conventional default outbound access method, but adhere to the new conventions. Subnets with this configuration are also referred to as 'private subnets'.

In this article, we are demonstrating (a) the limited connectivity of virtual machines deployed to private VNets. We are also exploring different options to (b) route traffic from these virtual machines to public internet and to (c) optimize the communication path for management a<br />Update Type: Announcement, Services: Load Balancer, Virtual Machines, Virtual Network, Azure Firewall, Categories: Security, Services, Management

Optimize Azure Landing Zone with Azure Virtual Network Manager IP Address Management

Optimize Azure Landing Zone with Azure Virtual Network Manager IP Address Management
What you will learn from this blog
This blog explores how Azure Landing Zones and IP Address Management (IPAM) in Azure Virtual Network Manager work together to streamline IP address management. Azure Landing Zones provide a scalable environment for deploying applications, while IPAM automates and simplifies IP planning and allocation across Azure, on-premises, and other clouds. By combining them, organizations can ensure efficient, conflict-free IP address usage, enhance security, and accelerate application deployments. The blog offers practical steps and examples for implementing this integrated solution, helping you optimize your Azure network infrastructure.
IP Address Management (IPAM) in Azure Virtual Network Manager (AVNM)
Azure IP Address Management (IPAM) is a feature in Azure Virtual Network Manager that simplifies managing IP addresses across your Azure environments, on-premises setups, and even other cloud providers. It helps you organize your IP addresses and Classless Inter-Domain Routings (CIDRs) efficiently and set clear rules for assigning them. With IPAM, you can automate the process of assigning IP addresses to virtual networks (VNets), which eliminates the need for cumbersome spreadsheets or custom tools.
This automation speeds up the process of launching new applications or expanding existing ones by allowing quick requests, registrations, and assignments of IP address spaces from your organization's pools to your VNets within seconds. This removes the need for manual requests or tickets to the network team, improving overall provisioning times.

VNets are the foundation of private networking in Azure, enabling services like Virtual Machines to communicate securely with each other, the internet, or on-premises networks. When setting up a VNet, you'll define an IP address space that can include both public and private ranges (such as those defined by RFC 19<br />Update Type: Announcement, Services: Virtual Machines, Virtual Network, VNet Manager, Categories: Security, Services, Management

This feature enables a group of virtual networks to directly communicate to each other without an additional hop, thus improving the latency and management overhead of establish each virtual network's desired connectivity. For example, you can use this feature to let a subset of the spoke virtual networks in a hub and spoke topology that require low latency to directly communicate to each other. The traffic between these virtual networks can be filtered using network security groups (NSGs) and Azure Virtual Network Manager's security admin rules while still maintaining this direct connectivity. To learn more about security admin rules and their use cases, please see our public documentation on security admin rules.

Additionally, the traffic can be monitored using virtual network flow logs.
ExpressRoute FastPath for UDRs and VNet peering

This article examines the data flow and performance benefits of Microsoft Azure's ExpressRoute and ExpressRoute FastPath features. It outlines the default asymmetric data routing and the enhancements achieved through FastPath. Key updates and constraints for FastPath, as well as IP address limits and monitoring metrics, are also discussed.

Data flow with ExpressRoute

The data flow between On-Premises and Azure using ExpressRoute is asymmetric by design.
The traffic from On-Premises to Azure transits via the ExpressRoute Gateway, but the return traffic (Azure to On-Premises) bypasses the ExpressRoute Gateway and is forwarded directly to the MSEEs.

If multiple ExpressRoute Circuits are advertising identical On-Premises routes and are connected to the same ExpressRoute Gateway, Azure to On-Premises traffic is distributed (ECMP) across the different ExpressRoute Circuits available unless traffic engineering is configured to prioritise one path over the others.

Data flow with ExpressRoute FastPath enabled

Enabling ExpressRoute FastPath allows On-Premises to Azure traffic to bypass the ExpressRoute Gateway, providing improved data path performances.

FastPath on ExpressRoute Direct circuit connections now also honors:

UDRs on the Gateway subnet, configured to route traffic through an AzFW in the hub (or a 3P FW NVA) for inspection: traffic coming from On-Premises and matching a UDR on the Gateway subnet will be sent directly to the AzFW or 3P NVA, bypassing the ExpressRoute Gateway.
VNet peering within the same region: traffic coming from On-Premises will be sent directly to VMs in spoke VNets, bypassing the ExpressRoute Gateway (global VNet peering is not supported).

ExpressRoute FastPath is configured per connection.

This results in reduced latency and the capability to exceed the ExpressRoute Gateway's maximum throughput limit of 10 Gbps with the UltraPerformance or ErGW3AZ Gateway SKU, or the 40 Gbps limi<br />Update Type: Announcement, Services: Virtual Machines, Virtual Network, ExpressRoute, Categories: Features

For example, you can use this feature to let a subset of the spoke virtual networks, that require low latency in hub and spoke topology to directly communicate to each other. The traffic between these virtual networks can be filtered using network security groups and Azure Virtual Network Manager’s security admin rules while maintaining direct connectivity. To learn more about security admin rules and their use cases, please see the documentations on security admin rule concepts.
Additionally, the traffic can be monitored using VNet flow logs. For further information on VNet flow logs, refer to the virtual network flow logs documentation.

Overview
Recently we added new customer configurable toggles for ExpressRoute Virtual Network Gateways and Virtual WAN Hubs, allowing customers to control the behaviour of routing across their ExpressRoute circuits for resources within Azure. These changes make it easier for customers to correctly use the Microsoft Global Network for connectivity between Virtual Networks, ensuring they obtain the lowest possible latency, highest network bandwidth and most resilient network paths.

Context
Using the ExpressRoute Private Peering for Virtual Network connectivity has long been inadvisable. To understand why, lets first acknowledge that Virtual Networks (VNets) are Azure resources deployed within Azure Regions (E.g. Azure East US), whilst Azure ExpressRoute Circuits are resources with a data plane that is deployed within Peering Locations (E.g. Washington DC). These entities (Regions and Peering Locations) can sometimes be close together, sometimes separated by a large geographical distance, but always logically separate locations.

Therefore, if we build an Azure Networking topology that utilises ExpressRoute Circuits for connectivity between our Virtual Networks, we are creating several sub-optimal conditions in our network design, including:

Dependency on Peering Locations for Inter-VNet traffic. If there is an issue with the Microsoft Enterprise Edge devices (MSEE) within the Peering Location, or the Peering location itself, this event can impact not only your hybrid traf<br />Update Type: Announcement, Services: Virtual Network, ExpressRoute, Virtual WAN, Categories: Management, Regions & Datacenters

How to Use Azure Virtual Network Manager's UDR Management Feature

What will you learn in this blog?

What is Azure Virtual Network Manager’s UDR management feature?
How UDR management simplifies route settings
How you can automate routing behavior for the following scenarios:

Spoke virtual networks communicate to each other in a hub and spoke topology via a firewall in the hub
Spoke virtual networks in two hub and spoke topologies communicate via firewalls in the hubs

What is Azure Virtual Network Manager?
Azure Virtual Network Manager (AVNM) is a highly scalable and available network management solution that allows customers to simplify and scale their networks in Azure.

Learn more about AVNM in our public documentation.

What is AVNM's UDR management feature and what is it solving?
User-defined route (UDR) management is a feature in AVNM that allows customers to describe their desired routing behavior via routing configurations that consist of routing rules. Upon deployment of the routing configuration, AVNM orchestrates UDRs to create the desired behavior.
AVNM aims to make managing routing behaviors easier and faster. Customers usually want to achieve different routing behaviors, and they usually create UDRs by hand or use custom scripts – however, these methods are complex and can cause mistakes, especially at scale. AVNM’s UDR management can simplify the process for you.

How does UDR management work?

UDR management configuration and rule collections
Similar to AVNM’s security admin feature, the UDR management feature is structured as a configuration that can contain multiple routing rule collections, which each can contain multiple routing rules.

Users create a routing configuration to define the desired routing behavior. Eventually, the user will need to deploy the routing configuration for the routing behavior described in its rules to take effect.
Within a routing configuration, there can be multiple rule collections. The function of the rule collection is to associate its rules with one or more target network gr<br />Update Type: Announcement, Services: Virtual Network, VNet Manager, Categories: Security, Management
