Application Insights Code Optimizations for .NET is now generally available

Application Insights Code Optimizations for .NET is now generally available
Application Insights Code Optimizations helps you identify and resolve performance bottlenecks at the code level in your .NET applications running on Azure. Utilizing an advanced AI-based model, it analyzes Application Insights profiler traces and displays actionable next steps in the Azure portal at no additional cost. This saves time and increases your productivity from detection in the Azure portal to code-level resolution with GitHub Copilot.

The AI model is developed in-house based on Microsoft’s experience with large-scale cloud services like Azure, Teams, Microsoft 365, and Xbox. It is not trained or fine-tuned using your code or your performance traces. Once your App Insights profiler is collecting and uploading traces for your .NET applications, the Code Optimizations analysis happens automatically.

Identify – Application Insights Code Optimizations
Based on your feedback, you can see all Code Optimizations recommendations across Azure subscriptions and Application Insights resources in the Azure portal. This helps you keep track of code-level performance recommendations for all your environments in one place (including dev, test, pre-production and production).

Recommendations are updated every hour. By default, the view shows a rolling 24-hour window of recently identified issues. When your application is under higher load, you might see more recommendations, while during quieter periods, you might not see any. There is a 30-day history for you to review and analyze past events.

Resolve – GitHub Copilot with Code Optimizations extension (preview)
Developers are very excited about how effectively they can consult with GitHub Copilot for code fixes specific to issues detected by Code Optimizations. In either Visual Studio or Visual Studio Code, you can install the Application Insights Code Optimizations extension (preview) and have GitHub Copilot provide a code fix grounde<br />Update Type: GA, Services: Azure Monitor, Categories: Services

Announcing the Public Preview of Azure Monitor Metrics Export

Today, customers can create Diagnostic Settings in their resources to export metric data for their resources to a set of destinations. Currently, export of metrics supported via Diagnostic Settings is limited. Customers cannot export metrics with dimensions, not all metrics are supported, and it incur a few minutes of latency.

We are excited to announce a platform metrics from Azure Monitor. This powerful addition allows customers to export metrics for their Azure resources on a large scale with full fidelity and low latency, along with the new added ability to filter particular metrics while configuring exports.

Azure Monitor Metrics Export is configurable through Data Collection Rules (DCR), which provides the capability to route Azure resource metrics data to Azure Storage Accounts, Azure Event Hubs and Azure Log Analytics Workspace for 18 resource types and 10 Azure public regions.

Here are some key features and benefits of Azure Monitor Metrics Export –

Easily scalable: DCR is the de facto collection configuration mechanism in Azure Monitor; it allows setting a collection config once and applying it at scale to many resources. DCR now provides an easier solution to span across subscriptions to export resources metrics at scale and provides flexibility if more resources need to be added in an existing DCR configuration.
Flexibility on what to collect: Customers can filter collection with a few select metrics or all metrics for a given set of resources, allowing for volume and cost control. With the new enhanced experience, customers can easily access the metrics they deem most important.
Export with full fidelity and low latency: Resource metric data is exported with dimensional information which provides ease of correlation. This feature significantly improves the metrics export latency.

By using Azure Monitor Metrics export, organizations can streamline their monitoring processes and improve their infrastructure's overall performance. We look forward<br />Update Type: Preview, Services: Azure Monitor, Azure Storage, Event Hubs, Categories: Features, Regions & Datacenters

Azure Monitor Alert Alerts: Log Search Alerts with Dynamic Thresholds (Private Preview)

Azure Monitor introduces Dynamic Thresholds also for Log Search Rules, revolutionizing how you set up log and monitor search alerts. Say goodbye to manual threshold tuning and hello to intelligent, adaptable monitoring.

Here’s why dynamic thresholds are a game-changer:

Automatic Calibration: Dynamic thresholds calculate the right alert levels for you. They adjust as your system evolves, ensuring timely alerts without false positives.
Smart Learning: Dynamic thresholds analyzing historical data, learning patterns and trends. They adapt to your application’s unique behavior, whether it’s daily spikes or weekly lulls.
Alerting At Scale: Create a single rule for any multi dimensions alert. Dynamic thresholds define different alert threshold band for every dimension combination.
Effortless Setup: Just enable dynamic thresholds, no need to have a specific knowledge of the data to setup alert thresholds.

Dynamic thresholds empower you to stay proactive, minimize downtime, and keep your systems running smoothly.

Use Cases
Here you can find use cases for dynamic threshold:

Use Case: Monitoring CPU Behavior in Virtual Machines
Background: Users can now calculate guest VM metrics using the Perf table in Log Analytics, enabling the creation of a single alert rule for all your VMs across different regions using dimensions. Previously, customers could only set up dynamic threshold metric alerts for host CPU usage.
Goal Statement: The primary goal of this use case is to monitor the CPU behavior within virtual machines (VMs) and detect irregular patterns that may indicate performance issues.
Scenario definitions:

Problem Identification:

The team wants to ensure optimal performance and identify any CPU-related issues promptly.

Use Case Description:

The CPU utilization data is being collected from each VM.
The system using the model analyses the CPU behavior over time, looking for deviations from the expected pattern.
Deviations may include sudden spik<br />Update Type: Preview, Services: Virtual Machines, Azure Monitor, Categories: Regions & Datacenters

Enhancements to Azure Monitor Baseline Alerts for Azure Landing Zones

Introduction

Welcome to our latest blog post where we dive into a number of exciting new key updates, highlight the new portal accelerator, and explain how to begin using it with just a few easy steps.

Azure Monitor Baseline Alerts offers a robust solution with recommended alert rules for Azure services. These best-practice rules can be deployed via ARM and Bicep templates or as Azure Policy definitions. Additionally, there are a growing list of patterns within AMBA offering guidance and deployment methods for monitoring different scenarios like the Azure Landing Zones pattern.

As cloud technologies evolve, so do the tools and frameworks that support effective management and monitoring of these environments. We have recently introduced several exciting updates to Azure Monitor Baseline Alerts (AMBA) for Azure Landing Zones (ALZ). These updates are designed to provide a more modular, flexible, and comprehensive monitoring experience.

Updated ALZ Portal Accelerator

In tandem with the new AMBA features, the ALZ Portal Accelerator has also been updated. This includes integration of the latest AMBA capabilities, providing a seamless and cohesive monitoring setup experience. The updated accelerator ensures that users have access to the most recent tools and features, enhancing the overall efficiency and effectiveness of their monitoring strategies.

The ALZ portal accelerator is designed for initial setup of Azure Landing Zones in a new environment where Email, ARM Roles and Webhooks can be selected as part of the initial deployment
AMBA ALZ pattern now also supports Logic Apps, Functions or Event Hubs as well as 'Bring your own Action Group' however, this requires these resources to be deployed prior to deployment.

When planning to deploy AMBA with these settings, first disable AMBA within the ALZ portal accelerator. Then, configure the required resources for your Logic App, Function, or Event Hub, and afterwards, use the AMBA portal acce<br />Update Type: Announcement, Services: Logic Apps, Azure Functions, Azure Monitor, Azure Policy, Event Hubs, Categories: Features, Services, Management

Operator/CRD support with Azure Monitor managed service for Prometheus is now Generally Available

We are excited to announce that custom resource definitions (CRD) support with Azure Monitor managed service for Prometheus is now generally available.

Azure Monitor managed service for Prometheus is a component of Azure Monitor Metrics, allowing you to collect and analyze metrics at scale using a Prometheus-compatible monitoring solution, based on the Prometheus project from the Cloud Native Computing Foundation. This fully managed service enables using the Prometheus query language (PromQL) to analyze and alert on the performance of monitored infrastructure and workloads.

What's new?
With this new update, customers can customize scraping targets using Custom Resources (Pod Monitors and Service Monitors), similar to the OSS Prometheus Operator. Enabling Managed Prometheus add-on in an AKS or ARC-enabled AKS will deploy the Pod and Service Monitor custom resource definitions to allow you to create your own custom resources. If you are already using Prometheus Service and Pod monitors to collect metrics from your workloads, you can simply change the apiVersion in the Service/Pod monitor definitions to use them with Azure Managed Prometheus.

Earlier, customers who did not have access to kube-system namespace were not able to customize metrics collection. With this update, customers can create custom resources to enable custom configuration of scrape jobs in any namespace. This is especially useful in a multitenancy scenario where customers are running workloads in different namespaces.

Here is how a leading Public Sector Banking and Financial Services and Insurance (BFSI) company in India has used Service and Pod monitors custom resources to enable monitoring of GPU metrics with Azure Managed Prometheus, DCGM Exporter, and Azure Managed Grafana.

“Azure Monitor managed service for Prometheus provides a production-grade solution for monitoring without the hassle of installation and maintenance. By leveraging these manag<br />Update Type: GA, Services: Kubernetes Service, Managed Grafana, Azure Monitor, Categories: Services

Announcing Azure Monitoring Agent support in Azure Landing Zones

Introduction

Hello and welcome to another blog post about Azure Landing Zones, the best practice framework for accelerating your cloud adoption journey. In this post, I will share with you some of the latest updates and enhancements that we have made to Azure Landing Zones.

One of the main components of Azure Landing Zones is the Azure Monitoring Agent (AMA), which enables you to collect and analyze data from your virtual machines, virtual machine scale sets, and hybrid resources. AMA provides a unified agent experience for Azure Monitor, Azure Security Center, Azure Sentinel, and other services. AMA replaces the legacy Log Analytics agent and Dependency agent, and offers better performance, reliability, and security.

We are happy to announce that all the implementation methods, including Terraform and Bicep have been updated and Azure Landing Zones is now exclusively using AMA for all its monitoring scenarios. This means that you can benefit from the latest features and capabilities of AMA, such as the ability to send custom logs and metrics, use Azure Arc to monitor hybrid resources, and leverage Azure Policy to deploy and manage AMA at scale.

As MMA is deprecating, as of the 31st of August 2024, please make sure that you are working towards migrating to AMA to avoid falling out of support. We're retiring the Log Analytics agent in Azure Monitor on 31 August 2024 | Azure updates | Microsoft Azure

Key Updates and Enhancements

Since January 2024, the Portal Accelerator has been utilizing AMA and has received a significant update. Let's explore the specifics of the recent updates.

Centralization of the User Assigned Managed Identity

One of the most noteworthy advancements is the centralized approach to User Assigned Managed Identities (UAMI). Here are the key highlights:

You can now create and manage dedicated clusters in Azure portal including cluster create, delete, link and unlink workspaces, change commitment tier and view clusters’ configuration.

Up until now, clusters could be provisioned and managed programmatically using CLI, PowerShell, and REST – We’ve received your asks to support it in Azure portal for simpler configuration and view, and easily answer questions like: how many workspaces are linked, or what is the commitment tier?
Additional experiences such as Customer-managed key configuration are planned next.

Public Preview: Summary rules in Azure Monitor Log Analytics, for optimal consumption experiences and cost

Status: In Preview

Summary rules allows you to aggregate ingested data to a workspace for each given query and cadence, and ingest the result back to a custom log table in workspace for optimal consumption experiences and cost.
Summary rules operates as batch processing directly in your Log Analytics workspace. It aims to summarize incoming data to your workspace in small chunks, defined by bin size, and ingest the results to Analytics custom log table in your workspace. While running complex queries on large data sets may time-out, and is limited on Basic tier, it's much easier to analyze and report on summarized data that has been “cleaned” and aggregated to a reduced set of data that you need. Example scenarios:

Perform analysis and reports on large data sets and time ranges for security and incident analysis, month-over-month and annual business reports.
Optimize cost ingesting low fidelity or verbose logs to tables in lower tier (e.g. Basic), and summarize to Analytics table that can be used for reports, dashboards, or analysis, and retained for long time in lower cost.
Segregate table level access for privacy and security, by obfuscation of privacy details in summarized data that can be shared.

Summary rules diagram

Rule configuration
Initial configuration is provided via REST in public clouds, and follow with Bicep and Terraform. CLI, PowerShell, and Azure portal are planned in the future around general availability.

Generally Available: Azure Monitor OpenTelemetry-based Distro adds Live Metrics

Status: Now Available
Azure Monitor application insights is a cloud native application monitoring offer which enables customers to observe failures, bottlenecks, and usage patterns to resolve incidents faster and reduce downtime.
Live Metrics is a production-grade capability within Azure Monitor application insights that enables you to see telemetry flowing off your application with one-second latency. For example, you may use Live Metrics as you deploy updates to production to see real-time key metrics (e.g. failure rate change).
The Azure Monitor OpenTelemetry “Distro” includes a thin wrapper that enables you to get started with a single line of code, and it includes added Azure-specific capabilities such as Live Metrics to give you a first-class experience on Azure.
Today’s announcement adds Live Metrics to .NET, Node.js, and Python. The Azure Monitor OpenTelemetry Java Distro already had Live Metrics. Our immediate next step is to add filtering to Live Metrics, so that you can customize your near-real time view.

New and improved network topology experience in Network Watcher and Azure Monitor Network Insights

Azure Network Watcher provides network monitoring and troubleshooting capabilities to increase observability and actionable insights. Network Watcher supports four main scenarios: Connectivity Monitoring detects packet loss and latency, built-in health metrics and topology visualization help to locate issues, traffic monitoring tracks network communication pattern, and diagnostics suite enables troubleshooting.
Efficient management and monitoring of cloud networks is crucial for peak performance, security, and reliability. The blog explains how the new topology experience can help you manage and monitor your cloud network infrastructure with enhanced visualization, simplified monitoring, valuable insights and contextual issue localization capabilities.

What is network topology and why is it important?
Topology has been a much used and appreciated feature of Network Watcher and Azure Monitor Network Insights. This upgrade empowers users to create a unified, and interconnected representation of network deployment across subscriptions, regions, and resource groups, including networking resources, Virtual Machines (VMs) and Virtual Machine Scale Sets (VMSS), along with insights into connectivity and traffic.
Topology helps users understand resource allocation, system context, and enables faster problem solving. Topology becomes a valuable resource for network administrators to understand large scale network architecture for inventory management and easy troubleshooting. It also aids application administrators and DevOps engineers in understanding the application's network structure and the interconnections among its components and resources.

Accelerate your observability journey with Azure Monitor pipeline (preview)

In the ever-evolving landscape of digital infrastructure, transparency in resource and application performance is imperative. Success hinges on visibility, and that’s true whether you’re operating on Azure, on-premise, or at the edge. As organizations scale their infrastructures and applications, the volume of observability data naturally increases. This surge can complicate the management of networking, data storage and ingestion, often forcing a trade-off between cost management and observability.

The complexity doesn’t end there. The very tools designed to ingest, process, and route this data can be both costly and complex, adding layers of operational challenges. Moreover, edge infrastructure is deployed near IoT devices for optimal data processing, high availability, and reduced latency. This adds its own set of challenges when it comes to collecting telemetry from such constrained environments.

Recognizing these challenges, our team has been focused on providing a robust, highly scalable, and secure data ingestion solution through Azure Monitor. We are thrilled to announce the preview of the Azure Monitor pipeline at edge.

What is Azure Monitor pipeline?
Azure Monitor pipeline, similar to ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) process, enhances traditional data collection methods. It streamlines data collection from various sources through a unified ingestion pipeline and utilizes a standardized configuration approach that is more efficient and scalable. This is particularly beneficial for cloud-based monitoring in Azure.
We are now extending our Azure Monitor pipeline capabilities from the cloud to the edge, enabling high-scale data ingestion with centralized configuration management.

What is Azure Monitor pipeline at edge?
Azure Monitor pipeline at edge is a powerful solution designed to facilitate high-scale data ingestion and routing from edge environments to Azure Monitor for observability. It leverages the robust capabilities of the vendor-agnostic<br />Update Type: Preview, Services: Azure Monitor, Categories: Management

Four Strategies for Cost-Effective Azure Monitoring and Log Analytics

Effective cost management in Azure Monitor and Azure Log Analytics is essential for controlling cloud expenditures. It involves strategic measures to reduce costs while maximizing the value derived from ingested, processed, and retained data. In Azure, achieving this balance entails adopting efficient data ingestion methods, smart retention policies, and judicious use of table transformations with Kusto Query Language (KQL).
Understanding the impact of data management practices on costs is crucial since each byte of data ingested and stored in Azure Log Analytics incurs expenses. Table transformations—such as filtering, projecting, aggregating, sorting, joining, and dropping data—are a great way to reduce storage and ingestion costs. They allow you to filter or modify data before it’s sent to a Log Analytics workspace. Reducing ingestion cost and also reducing long-term storage.
This document will explore four key areas to uncover strategies for optimizing the Azure Monitor and Azure Log Analytics environment, ensuring cost-effectiveness while maintaining high performance and data integrity. Our guide will provide comprehensive insights for managing cloud expenses within Azure services.

Key Areas of Focus:

Ingestion Cost Considerations: The volume of data ingested primarily influences costs. Implementing filters at the source is crucial to capture only the most relevant data.
Data Retention Strategies: Effective retention policies are vital for cost control. Azure Log Analytics allows automatic purging of data past certain thresholds, preventing unnecessary storage expenses.
Optimization through Transformations: Refining the dataset through table transformations can focus efforts on valuable data and reduce long-term storage needs. Note that these transformations won't reduce costs within the minimum data retention period.
Cost Management Practices: Leveraging Azure Cost Management and Billing tools is crucial for gaining insight int<br />Update Type: Announcement, Services: Cost Management, Azure Monitor, Categories: Services, Management

Azure Monitor Availability alerts using Resource Graph Queries

We recently announced how you can use Azure Log Analytics to create alerts on Azure Resource Graph queries. Here, I wanted to discuss possible scenarios and examples on how this can be used to check the availability for services across Azure and even on Azure Arc enabled resources.

Azure Resource Graph queries
Azure Resource Graph is a service within Azure that enhances Azure Resource Management. It allows you to explore resources efficiently and quickly by running queries across a specific group of subscriptions. These queries are written in the Kusto Query Language (KQL), which is a widely used format with other Azure services like Log Analytics.

Trivia: Most of the screens you see on Azure portal give you an option to check the KQL query behind getting that data.

Using Graph queries to generate alerts
Earlier, it was only possible to generate alerts using Log Analytics queries or Metrics. Now, the alerts can be generated on Azure Resource Graph queries. This can really help with setting up the availability alerts for most of the Azure services. Let us take a look at it with some examples.

SQL Managed Instance Availability
SQL MI supports various types of Metrics and Logs with Azure Monitor. However, sometimes, customers only want to receive a simple alert on whether the instance is up or down. ARG query can let you know the state of the instance which can be further converted to an alert.

Resources
| where type == "microsoft.sql/managedinstances"
| project name, state = tostring(properties.state)

The above query can give you the current state of the SQL MI instance.

Now, this same query can be converted to an alert. The idea is to check if the SQL MI instance is in any other state than “Ready” and generate the alert. For this, we can write something like this:

Resources
| where type == "microsoft.sql/managedinstances"
| extend state = tostring(properties.state)
| extend available = iif(state=="Ready" ,1 ,0)
| project name, available

Result:

Azure Monitor- Announcing General Availability of Azure Monitor Metrics Data Plane API

In the ever-evolving landscape of cloud computing, Azure Monitor has been committed to providing insights into Azure resources. Azure's extensive API services have allowed customers to glean valuable data about their resources, facilitating deep analytics and informed decision-making. However, for those customers who require large-scale and high-frequency access to metric data, the existing Azure Monitor REST API had its limitations, with throttling becoming a bottleneck.
To address this challenge and to empower customers with the ability to query metrics at scale, Microsoft Azure introduced the Azure Metrics Data Plane API. We are thrilled to announce that after a successful Public Preview launch in April 2023, the Azure Metrics Data Plane API is now Generally Available. This powerful addition allows customers to query metrics for their Azure resources at a large scale and now it comes with added SDK (Beta) support for .NET, Java, JavaScript, Python, and Go languages.

So, what is Azure Monitor Metrics Data Plane API?
Azure Metrics Data plane API is a new paradigm in Azure monitoring which makes resource insight gathering more efficient with a higher capacity querying experience. It provides the capability to retrieve the metric data for up to 50 resource IDs in the same subscription and region in a single batch API call thus improving query throughput and reducing the risk of throttling.
The Azure Metrics Data Plane API comes with several key features and benefits:
