Monitor effectively using Azure Monitor for Azure Site Recovery

As a Backup and Site Recovery Admin, one of your key roles is to be on top of all critical incidents and ensure timely resolution from an outage. Azure Site Recovery now offers an improved alerting solution for Azure Site Recovery on Azure Monitor. This includes default alerts via Azure Monitor, which will enable you to have consistent experience for alert management across different Azure services.

With Azure Monitor based alerts, you can route alerts to any notification channel supported by Azure Monitor, such as email, Webhook, Logic app, and more. You can also use other alert management capabilities offered by Azure Monitor, for example, suppressing notifications during a planned maintenance window, correlate alerts, etc.

Benefits of Azure Monitor

Ability to configure notifications to a wide range of notification channels - Azure Monitor supports a wide range of notification channels such as email, ITSM, webhooks, logic apps, and so on. You can configure notifications for backup alerts to any of these channels without needing to spend too much time creating custom integrations.
Ability to select which scenarios to get notified about - With Azure Monitor alerts, you can choose which scenarios to get notified about. You also have the flexibility to choose whether to enable notifications for test subscriptions or not.
Ability to manage alerts and notifications programmatically - You can leverage Azure Monitor’s REST APIs to manage alerts and notifications via non-portal clients as well.
Ability to have a consistent alerts management experience for multiple Azure services including backup - Azure Monitor is the established paradigm for monitoring resources across Azure. With the integration of Azure Backup with Azure Monitor, backup alerts can be managed in the same way as alerts for other Azure services without requiring a separate paradigm.

Preview: Introducing Reporting Capabilities for Azure Site Recovery

As a Backup and Disaster Recovery Admin, one of your key roles is to obtain insights on data that spans a long time. Similar to Azure Backup, Azure Site Recovery provides a reporting solution that uses Azure Monitor logs and Azure workbooks. These resources will help you get rich insights on your estate protected with Site Recovery.

Reporting for azure site recovery will help meet requirements such as:

Troubleshooting
Auditing of failover and replication
Identifying key trends at different levels of granularity

Reporting Scenarios

Site recovery reports are available to provide historical information on Site Recovery Jobs and, Site Recovery Replicated Items
Site Recovery reports are supported for Azure VM replication to Azure, Hyper-V replication to Azure, VMWare replication to Azure – Classic & Modernized. You can find them as filterable options under Replication Scenario: Azure/ Hybrid.

Pre-requisites for Reports

  1. Create a Log Analytics workspace or use an existing one
Set up one or more Log Analytics workspaces to store your reporting data. The location and subscription where this Log Analytics workspace can be created is independent of the location and subscription where your vaults exist. To set up a Log Analytics workspace, see Create a Log Analytics workspace in the Azure portal.
The data in a Log Analytics workspace is kept for 30 days by default. If you want to see data for a longer time span, change the retention period of the Log Analytics workspace. To change the retention period, see Configure data retention and archive policies in Azure Monitor Logs.

  2. Configure diagnostics settings for your vaults
Azure Resource Manager resources, such as Recovery Services vaults, record information about site recovery jobs and replicated items as diagnostics data. To configure diagnostics settings for your vaults, follow thes
Update Type: Preview, Services: Virtual Machines, Azure Backup, Site Recovery, Azure Monitor, Categories: Services

Protecting Azure VM against Zonal/Regional outages using Azure Site Recovery and Azure Backup

Guidance for protecting Azure Virtual Machine against Zonal/Regional outages using Azure Site Recovery and Azure Backup

Summary
Disaster Recovery (DR) and Backup are two ways to recover from outages. To ensure that you have the necessary controls to protect your data even when relying on native tools included by your provider, you must get familiar with the platform features, weigh in the cost and benefits, and formulate a data protection strategy that best works for your business. The following provides a summary of choices provided by Azure Backup and Azure Site Recovery:

You can recover your Azure Virtual Machines and databases against zonal outages by using Azure Backup. In the event of an outage, you can recover to either the secondary availability zone or the secondary paired Azure region, with a RPO (Recovery Point Objective) of approximately 36 hours.
You can recover your Azure Virtual Machines against outages by using Azure Site Recovery. In the event of an outage, you can recover to either the secondary availability zone or the secondary Azure region, with a RPO (Recovery Point Objective) of approximately 5 minutes and an RTO (Recovery Time Objective) of less than 1 hour.
Outage scenarios and options:

Zonal Outage

Regional Outage

Azure Backup

You can protect zone-pinned/non-zone-pinned VM from a vault with Zonal-redundant storage (ZRS) enabled.
You can restore an Azure VM from the default zone to other availability zones within that region (Cross Zonal Restore – CZR).

You can enable Cross Region Restore (CRR) on vault with GRS redundancy, to get the ability to view the backup items in the secondary region.
You can restore an Azure VMs from backed-up data in the secondary region Peven if the primary region is (un)available.

Azure Site Recovery

Zone-to-Zone disaster recovery option makes it possible to replic
Update Type: Announcement, Services: Virtual Machines, Azure Backup, Site Recovery, Categories: Features

Announcing the Public Preview of Azure Site Recovery with Azure Stack HCI

In October 2021 we announced the support of Azure Site Recovery to protect virtual machines (VM) workloads on Azure Stack HCI. Based on customer feedback, we have improved the ASR agent deployment experience and now we are excited to announce the Public Preview of the new ASR agent deployment experience as an Arc extension.

What is Azure Site Recovery (ASR)?
ASR is an Azure service that helps ensure business continuity by keeping business apps and workloads running during outages. ASR replicates workloads running on physical and virtual machines from a primary site to a secondary location. When an outage occurs at your primary site, you fail over to a secondary location, and access apps from there. After the primary location is running again, you can fail back to it.

In case of an outage, you can failover your VM workloads from Azure Stack HCI to Azure and access your VMs on Azure. Once your Azure Stack HCI cluster is running again, you can failback the VM workloads to your Azure Stack HCI cluster.

What's new in Public Preview?
The ASR agent is now packaged as an Arc extension. From the Azure portal, you can deploy the ASR agent to the nodes of your Azure Stack HCI cluster as an Arc extension. If a node is added at a later point in time, the ASR agent will be automatically deployed to the newly added node, by virtue of it being an Arc extension. This reduces the overhead of needing to install the agent manually on every cluster node and simplifies the steps to prepare the infrastructure prior to protecting your VM workloads. Once the extension is installed, you can leverage the existing ASR flow to protect, failover and failback VMs.

There are a few prerequisites to deploy the ASR agent as an Arc extension to the nodes of your Azure Stack HCI cluster:

Azure Stack HCI cluster should be registered with Azure and Arc-enabled. If you registered your cluster on or after June 15, 2021, this happens by default. Otherwise, you'll need to ena
Update Type: Preview, Services: Virtual Machines, Site Recovery, Categories: Services
