Introducing the Data-Bound Reference Layer in Azure Maps Visual for Power BI

Imagine managing a nationwide sales team and needing to understand how your sales align with factors like population density, competitor locations, or even regional weather patterns. Visualizing this data on a map offers powerful insights—not only showing where your team is excelling but also uncovering new market opportunities. Now, with the Data-Bound Reference Layer feature in the Azure Maps visual for Power BI, you can achieve this level of insight, blending geographic and business data for enriched decision-making.

What is the Data-Bound Reference Layer?
The Data-Bound Reference Layer is an advanced capability that enables users to bind their data directly to custom reference layers in the Azure Maps visual. Think of it as adding a multi-dimensional view to your Power BI maps. With support for data from multiple sources, such as Shapefiles, GeoJSON, and many more datasets, users can create a fully customizable, data-driven map that renders polygons based on live data.

This reference layer acts as a “contextual overlay” on your map. Standard data points in Power BI visuals highlight locations, but the Data-Bound Reference Layer goes further, allowing you to visualize additional insights, such as demographic boundaries, sales territories, or high-priority zones. What used to be a static, single-dimension map can now become an interactive, fully adaptable visualization that changes as your data does, providing real-time insights as conditions evolve.

Conditional Formatting: Making Data Pop
The power of the Data-Bound Reference Layer extends with conditional formatting, which allows you to style maps dynamically based on your data values. Colors, shapes, and sizes can be tailored to specific data thresholds, making it easier to spot trends, outliers, and areas needing immediate attention.

For instance, in disaster response, a map showing hospital densities can use conditional formatting to highlight regions with lower hospital coverage in a distinct color, or
Update Type: Announcement, Services: Power BI Embedded, Azure Maps, Categories: Regions & Datacenters

Introducing the Unified Azure Maps Experience

We are thrilled to announce the unification of Bing Maps for Enterprise (BME) with Azure Maps, marking a significant milestone in our geospatial services at Microsoft. Azure Maps now boasts a robust stack of geospatial offerings, leveraging the powerful capabilities of Microsoft Maps, which also drives Bing Maps (our consumer maps experience). Over the past year, our team has dedicated significant time and effort to combine the strengths of Bing Maps for Enterprise into Azure Maps, enhancing our global quality and coverage.
One of the major enhancements is the adoption of vector tiles in Azure Maps for a more responsive map experience. When utilizing Azure Maps in your solutions, you not only leverage the security and compliance advantages of Azure but also benefit from the extensive quality and coverage provided by Microsoft Maps.

This unification ensures that users of Azure Maps receive a comprehensive mapping solution backed by the unparalleled strengths of Azure’s infrastructure, Microsoft Maps’ data quality and coverage, and many of the same advanced geospatial capabilities that Bing Maps for Enterprise customers depend on. We are excited about the opportunities this integration presents and look forward to continuing to deliver innovative mapping solutions to our customers worldwide.

Azure Maps has many of the same features that BME customers have come to rely on. Nevertheless, this unification also introduces exciting new features to Azure Maps, such as weather APIs, private indoor maps, multiple authentication methods, geolocation service, and robust privacy and compliance benefits.

Ready to Make the Move?
For customers that are using Bing Maps for Enterprise and are migrating over to Azure Maps, some development will be needed. To help you in this transition period, we have written migration documents for our REST APIs and as well for the Azure Maps web control.
Update Type: Announcement, Services: Azure Maps, Categories: Features, Compliance, Security, Services

Filled Map is now available in Power BI Azure Maps Visual

With the latest update of Power BI, the Azure Maps visual now also supports the filled map layer. The filled map layer uses varying degrees of shading, tinting, or different patterns to provide a visual display that quickly shows differences in values across geography or region. Showing these relative differences with shading that ranges from light (less-frequent/lower) to dark (more-frequent/more) is a helpful way to quickly convey information to viewers.

The filled map layer helps to answer these questions:

Visualize sales or revenue results by country or state.
Visualize election results where the color represents the party that won, and the shading represents the margin of victory.
Visualize unemployment rates by region, state, or county.

Color scheme selection is critical as it may decide or influence how users perceive the message conveyed by the visualization. Color represents the values of the numeric variable in each region of the Map. Colors can be a blending or a single and comparable color, so the target audience can quickly tell the differences. Below is an example of how to design the color scheme to visualize revenue data across the states.

The image below uses the color scheme we created and shows an example of a filled map. The Map of America shows each state with a different shade representing sales by state. For example, a viewer can immediately see that California has the most sales, followed by Texas, then Florida.

The filled map layer works with categorical data as well; In this example, it is used to visualize the performance of each business unit in different states.

When using the filled map layer, you must remember that larger states or areas naturally attract more attention over color. This effect can result in misinterpreted and wrong conclusions.
