Optimizing Docker Images for Java Applications on Azure Container Apps

Introduction

In the cloud-native era, the need for rapid application startup and automated scaling has become more critical, especially for Java applications, which require enhanced solutions to meet these demands effectively. In a previous blog post Accelerating Java Applications on Azure Kubernetes Service with CRaC, we explored using CRaC technology to address these challenges. CRaC enables faster application startup and reduces recovery times, thus facilitating efficient scaling operations. In this blog post, we’ll delve further into optimizing container images specifically for Azure Container Apps (ACA), by leveraging multi-stage builds, Spring Boot Layer Tools, and Class Data Sharing (CDS) to create highly optimized Docker images. By combining these techniques, you’ll see improvements in both the image footprint and the startup performance of your Java applications on ACA. These improvements make Java applications more agile and responsive to frequent cloud-native deployments, ensuring they can keep pace with modern operational demands

Key Takeaways

After testing different Docker optimization techniques, we observed the following improvements on Azure Container Apps:

Multi-stage builds reduced the image size by 33%, leading to faster image pulls.
Spring Boot Layer Tools further optimized the build process by reducing unnecessary rebuilds, slightly improving both image pull and startup times.
Class Data Sharing (CDS) provided the most impactful benefit, reducing application startup time by 27%, significantly enhancing runtime performance.

These optimizations not only reduce the size and pull time of the image but also make deployments more efficient, saving both time and resources.

Overview of Optimization Techniques

Multi-Stage Builds

Multi-stage builds are a powerful Docker feature that allows you to create leaner images by reducing the layers that make it to the final build. In the first stage, you can perform all heavy operations, suc<br />Update Type: Announcement, Services: Kubernetes Service, Container Apps, Categories: Services

Modernising Registrar Technology: Implementing EPP with Kotlin, Spring & Azure Container Apps

Introduction
In the domain management industry, technological advancement has often been a slow and cautious process, lagging behind the rapid innovations seen in other tech sectors. This measured pace is understandable given the critical role domain infrastructure plays in the global internet ecosystem. However, as we stand on the cusp of a new era in web technology, it is becoming increasingly clear that modernization should be a priority. This blog post embarks on a journey to demystify one of the most critical yet often misunderstood components of the industry: the Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP).

Throughout this blog, we will dive deep into the intricacies of EPP, exploring its structure, commands and how it fits into the broader domain management system. We will walk through the process of building a robust EPP client using Kotlin and Spring Boot. Then, we will take our solutions to the next level by containerizing with Docker and deploying it to Azure Container Apps, showcasing how modern cloud technologies can improve the reliability and scalability of your domain management system. We will also set up a continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) pipeline, ensuring that your EPP implementation remains up-to-date and easily maintainable.

By the end of this blog, you will be able to provision domains programatically via an endpoint, and have the code foundation ready to create dozens of other domain management commands (e.g. updating nameservers, updating contact info, renewing and transferring domains).

Who it is for

This guide is tailored primarily for registrars — services who serve as the crucial intermediary between domain registrants (the end user who wishes to claim their piece of internet real estate) and the registry systems that manage those domains. While the concepts we will explore have broad applications across the domain industry, the perspective throughout will be firmly rooted in the registrar's role. The fun<br />Update Type: Announcement, Services: Container Apps, Categories: Services, Management

Announcing the General Availability of Java experiences on Azure Container Apps

Azure Container Apps is a fully managed, serverless container platform that enables you to build, deploy, and run containerized applications. With Azure Container Apps, you can elastically scale down to 0 and expand as needed. You can design resilient microservices with unified networking and leverage GPU-enabled workload profiles to run AI-powered apps anytime anywhere. All of this means your developer gets to spend a lot more time writing code for your business and not get sidetracked by things that don’t directly contribute to your success. To take things to the next level, we’ve created a wide range of productivity experiences to help you configure, monitor and troubleshoot Java apps, which are now generally available.

Applications, especially microservices, need some type of middleware to facilitate service-to-service communication. With Azure Container Apps, you can use Spring Cloud Service Registry for service discovery, Spring Cloud Config server to externalize app configurations, as well as monitor metrics and download dump files from Spring Boot Admin.

These components are fully managed and exist in the Azure Container Apps environment. They’re readily available to serve your Java apps, so you can simply use them and let Azure handle the operational details. As a developer or DevOps engineer, you no longer need to worry about mundane tasks such as installation, version upgrades, or HA when it comes to running managed Java components in Azure Container Apps.

To ensure applications operate in top conditions and meet desired levels of throughput and availability, it’s very important that you monitor various aspects of application metrics. Azure container apps is natively integrated with Azure Monitor, providing out-of-box JVM and Tomcat metrics alongside with container metrics. This already covers the majority of diagnostic scenarios running containerized apps in the cloud. However, to tackle more complex issues like identifying memory<br />Update Type: GA, Services: Virtual Machines, Azure Monitor, Azure Spring Apps, Container Apps, Categories: Services

Deploying .NET Apps to Azure Container Apps with One Command, azd up

In my previous blog posts of containerising .NET apps and Function apps, I discussed how to containerise .NET apps and Azure Functions apps with and without Dockerfile. However, deploying these containerised apps to Azure Container Apps (ACA) is a different story.

Since its release in May 2023, Azure Developer CLI (azd) has evolved significantly. azd nowadays even automatically generates Bicep files for us to immediately provision and deploy applications to Azure. With this feature, you only need the azd up command for provisioning and deployment.

Throughout this post, I'm going to discuss how to provision and deploy .NET apps including Azure Functions to ACA through just one command, azd up.

You can find a sample code from this GitHub repository.

Prerequisites

There are a few prerequisites to containerise .NET apps effectively.

.NET SDK 8.0+
Visual Studio or Visual Studio Code + C# Dev Kit
Azure Developer CLI
Azure Functions Core Tools
Docker Desktop

Running the app locally

The sample app repository already includes the following apps:

Blazor app as a frontend
ASP.NET Core Web API app as a backend
Azure Functions app as another backend

Let's make sure those apps running properly on your local machine. In order to run those apps locally, open three terminal windows and run the following commands on each terminal:

# Terminal 1 - ASP.NET Core Web API
dotnet run --project ./ApiApp

# Terminal 2 - Azure Functions
cd ./FuncApp
dotnet clean && func start

# Terminal 3 - Blazor app
dotnet run --project ./WebApp

Open your web browser and navigate to https://localhost:5001 to see the Blazor app running. Then navigate to https://localhost:5001/weather to see the weather data fetched from the ApiApp and the greetings populated from the FuncApp.

Now, let's start using azd to provision and deploy these apps to ACA. Make sure that you've already logged in to Azure with the azd auth login command.

Asynchronous HTTP APIs with Azure Container Apps jobs

When building HTTP APIs, it can be tempting to synchronously run long-running tasks in a request handler. This approach can lead to slow responses, timeouts, and resource exhaustion. If a request times out or a connection is dropped, the client won't know if the operation completed or not. For CPU-bound tasks, this approach can also bog down the server, making it unresponsive to other requests.

In this post, we'll look at how to build an asynchronous HTTP API with Azure Container Apps. We'll create a simple API that implements the Asynchronous Request-Reply pattern: with the API hosted in a container app and the asynchronous processing done in a job. This approach provides a much more robust and scalable solution for long-running tasks.

Long-running API requests in Azure Container Apps

Azure Container Apps is a serverless container platform. It's ideal for hosting a variety of workloads, including HTTP APIs.
Like other serverless and PaaS platforms, Azure Container Apps is designed for short-lived requests — its ingress currently has a maximum timeout of 4 minutes. As an autoscaling platform, it's designed to scale dynamically based on the number of incoming requests. When scaling in, replicas are removed. Long-running requests can terminate abruptly if the replica handling the request is removed.

Azure Container Apps jobs

Azure Container Apps has two types of resources: apps and jobs. Apps are long-running services that respond to HTTP requests or events. Jobs are tasks that run to completion and can be triggered by a schedule or an event.

Jobs can also be triggered programmatically. This makes them a good fit for implementing asynchronous processing in an HTTP API. The API can start a job execution to process the request and return a response immediately. The job can then take as long as it needs to complete the processing. The client can poll a status endpoint on the app to check if the job has completed and get the result.

The Asynchronous Request-Re<br />Update Type: Announcement, Services: Container Apps, Categories: Services

Easily deploy .NET apps to Azure Container Apps with default configuration for data protection

The Azure Container Apps and .NET team have made it easier than ever to deploy your .NET application by supporting automatic configuration for data protection. This support is currently available as an opt-in feature in the Container Apps API version 2024-02-02-preview.

This blog post will discuss the feature and what it enables, how to determine if your application is correctly configured, and how to enable configuration for data protection across a variety of .NET versions.

What is data protection?

Many ASP.NET Core apps rely on a feature called data protection, which is a cryptographic API to protect data using methods like key management and rotation. By default, it requires additional configuration in both Azure and in application code to function correctly when hosted in Container Apps.

If data protection isn’t configured, the application will appear to function correctly but will experience bugs when the application scales out to multiple replicas.

For detailed information about the data protection feature, read here.

Configuring data protection for your .NET Application

The process of configuring the data protection feature varies depending on the version of .NET you are using.

.NET Aspire

Aspire applications deployed using the Azure Developer CLI (azd) will have data protection configured by default.

.NET 8 and up

If you are using ASP.NET Core v9.0.0-preview.2.24128.4 and later and ASP.NET Core v8.0.4 and newer, you can configure data protection using ARM and Bicep.

This can be done with turning on the new `autoConfigureDataProtection` property, which will allow ASP.NET Core data protection keys to be automatically managed by the platform.

.NET 7 and under

If you are using ASP.NET Core with a lower version than previously described, you will have to configure data protection manually. We recommend upgrading to one of the supported .NET versions or doing so using ARM.

Next Steps

Congratulations, you now ensured that your .NET application has<br />Update Type: Announcement, Services: Container Apps, Categories: Management

Enhancing Performance in Azure Container Apps

Azure Container Apps is a powerful platform for running serverless, containerized applications and microservices. In the team’s ongoing commitment to improving Azure Container Apps’ performance, we’ve recently made significant improvements to make the scaling and load balancing behavior of Azure Container Apps more intuitive and better align with customer expectations to meet their performance needs.

Hopefully, some of the insights from our experience in working with Envoy and KEDA will be helpful to you.

Load Balancing Algorithm Update
In the past, Azure Container Apps relied on the ring hash load balancing algorithm to distribute incoming requests across containers. Ring hash aims for minimal distribution by generating a hash based on request properties to match it with a stable upstream instance. However, as a result, some instances will receive an uneven share of requests. This is especially apparent during load tests where there are a small number of clients and could lead to potential bottlenecks.

Switching to Round Robin
To address this issue, we transitioned Azure Container Apps to use the round robin load balancing algorithm when session affinity is not enabled for an app. These are some of the benefits you can expect to see:

Uniform Request Distribution: Round robin evenly distributes requests among containers, reducing the likelihood that one replica gets overloaded and helps utilize all resources effectively.
Improved Scalability: With a balanced request load, Azure Container Apps can scale more effectively.
Predictable Behavior: Developers can now rely on more consistent behavior across containers, simplifying troubleshooting and monitoring.

We’ve observed a significant improvement in overall system performance since implementing this change, and our customers can expect better resource utilization. When session affinity is enabled, Azure Container Apps still uses a ring hashing algorithm to match sequential requests with a consistent upstream cl<br />Update Type: Announcement, Services: Container Apps, Categories: Services
