As previously communicated, the following Azure services reached end of life on August 31, 2024: Azure App Service Environment v1 and v2 Logic Apps Integration Service Environment Azure API Management stv1 Customers running retired environments should migrate immediately to avoid security risk and loss of data. As part of our ongoing communication and assistance to migrate customers safely to their new environments, this article provides more information on the customer experience for any workloads that remain in production beginning 1st September 2024. Please see the call-to-action section for a list of migration resources and guidance. What will happen to applications after August 31, 2024? We expect applications to remain available in the days immediately following the retirement date. However, Azure will start decommissioning the associated hardware. Maintenance tasks for decommissioning will affect customers’ application's availability and performance. This process will not have any impact on applications already on the latest version or those that were approved for extension before the retirement date. The post-retirement customer experience will depend on the service, as follows: Azure App Service Environment (ASE) v1 and v2: Customers who remain on ASE v1/v2 environments after the retirement date will experience intermittent outages as our teams prepare the environment for newer versions of the software. Please acknowledge the outages and begin work to migrate immediately. If there is no response or action from customers, we will attempt to auto-migrate the legacy environments. Please consider this only as a last resort and this scenario may require additional configuration from customers to bring the applications back online. It is essential that customers evaluate their v1/v2 environments and use the provided resources to complete the migration. Let's try to answer that question and show a practical example of how to use managed identities in Azure. It's a feature in Azure that allows applications to authenticate to cloud services securely without needing to manage credentials like API keys. Managed identity in Azure works by providing an *automatically managed identity* for applications to use when connecting to resources that support Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) authentication. > Ok, so I don't need to create this identity myself, sounds good so far. Types of Managed Identities Here's a breakdown of how it works. There are two types of managed identities in Azure: System-Assigned Managed Identity - Creation: Automatically created when enabled on an Azure resource like a virtual machine or an app service. - Lifecycle: Tied to the lifecycle of the resource. WordPress is an open-source Content Management System (CMS) used by over 40% of the web to create websites, blogs, and other applications. It can be deeply customized to fit unique developer portal needs. Further, it has a vibrant community with a rich ecosystem of themes and plugins. Microsoft Azure App service provides customers with a fully managed, performant, secure and scalable hosting solution for WordPress. Azure API Management WordPress plugin enables our customers to leverage the power of WordPress to build their own unique developer portal. This plugin can be easily deployed and installed and is available in open-source GitHub repository along with installation instructions. In May 2024, we introduced GenAI Gateway capabilities – a set of features designed specifically for GenAI use cases. Today, we are happy to announce that we are adding new policies to support a wider range of large language models through Azure AI Model Inference API. These new policies work in a similar way to the previously announced capabilities, but now can be used with a wider range of LLMs. Azure AI Model Inference API enables you to consume the capabilities of models, available in Azure AI model catalog, in a uniform and consistent way. It allows you to talk with different models in Azure AI Studio without changing the underlying code. Working with large language models presents unique challenges, particularly around managing token resources. Token consumption impacts cost and performance of intelligent apps calling the same model, making it crucial to have robust mechanisms for monitoring and controlling token usage. The new policies aim to address challenges by providing detailed insights and control over token resources, ensuring efficient and cost-effective use of models deployed in Azure AI Studio. LLM Token Limit Policy LLM Token Limit policy (preview) provides the flexibility to define and enforce token limits when interacting with large language models available through the Azure AI Model Inference API. However, you have a big operation with many customers and many different apps and enterprise grade requirements on security and you know you must tackle all that before you can adopt generative AI to your business. Problems we must address You write up a list of problems that you need to address to fully implement generative AI: - Load balancing and circuit breaker: With many customers, it’s key that you can distribute the load across multiple instances. Also, error management is super important, to ensure that if one instance fails, the others can take over. In the cloud a common approach to error management is Circuit breaker helps by stopping the requests to the failing instance and redirecting them to the healthy ones. - Monitoring and metrics: You want to monitor the usage of the AI model, how many requests are coming in, how many are failing, and how many are successful. By providing isolated administrative access and API runtime, workspaces empower API teams, while allowing the API platform team to retain oversight with central monitoring, enforcement of API policies and compliance, and publishing APIs for discovery through a unified developer portal. Isolated Administrative Access and API Runtime Workspaces function like "folders" within an API Management service. Each workspace contains APIs, products, subscriptions, named values, and related resources. Access to resources within a workspace is managed through Azure's role-based access control (RBAC) with built-in or custom roles assignable to Microsoft Entra accounts. Workspaces now offer API runtime isolation through association with a workspace API gateway, allowing teams to manage gateways and their configurations. The past year has seen explosive growth for Azure OpenAI and large language models in general. With models reliant on a token-based approach for processing requests, ensuring prompt engineering is being done correctly, tracking what models and api’s are being used, load balancing across multiple instances, and creating chargeback models has become increasingly important. The use of Azure API Management (APIM) is key to solving these challenges. There have been several announcements specific to the integration of Azure Open AI and APIM during Microsoft Build 2024 to make them easier to use together. As the importance of evaluating analytics and performing data science against Azure Open AI based workloads grows, storing usage information is critical. That’s where adding Microsoft Fabric and the Lakehouse to the architecture comes in. Capturing the usage data in an open format for long term storage while enabling fast querying rounds out the overall solution. We must also consider that not all use cases will require the use of a Large Language Model (LLM). The recent rise of Small Language Models (SLM), such as Phi-3, for use cases that do not require LLMs, means there will very likely be multiple types of Generative AI (GenAI) models in use for a typical enterprise and they will all be exposed through a centrally secured and governed set of APIs enabling every GenAI use case for rapid onboarding and adoption. Having an AI Center of Enablement framework providing “AI-as-a-Service" will be incredibly important for organizations to safely enable different GenAI models quickly and their numerous versions all within the allocated budget or by using a chargeback model that can span across the enterprise regardless of the number of teams consuming the AI services and the number of subscriptions or environments they end up requiring. Azure OpenAI service offers a diverse set of tools, providing access to advanced models like GPT3.5-Turbo to GPT-4 and GPT-4 Vision, enabling developers to build intelligent applications that can understand, interpret, and generate human-like text and images. One of the main resources you have in Azure OpenAI is tokens. Azure OpenAI assigns quota for your model deployments expressed in tokens-per-minute (TPMs) which is then distributed across your model consumers that can be represented by different applications, developer teams, departments within the company, etc. Starting with a single application integration, Azure makes it easy to connect your app to Azure OpenAI. Your intelligent application connects to Azure OpenAI directly using API Key with a TPM limit configured directly on the model deployment level. However, when you start growing your application portfolio, you are presented with multiple apps calling single or even multiple Azure OpenAI endpoints deployed as Pay-as-you-go or Provisioned Throughput Units (PTUs) instances. That comes with certain challenges: How can we track token usage across multiple applications? How can we do cross charges for multiple applications/teams that use Azure OpenAI models? How can we make sure that a single app does not consume the whole TPM quota, leaving other apps with no option to use Azure OpenAI models?
